Do You Want to Drive?

It’s early morning, you finish eating your breakfast and head out turning your bejeweled car key on your index finger, humming to the tunes of your favorite song. As you open the door and step outside you, the brightness of the sun hits your face. You head towards your car and began to put the key into the lock. Suddenly you look up and realize that you are no longer in America. You are in Saudi Arabia, and women here can not drive.

There is no law that bans Saudi Arabian women from driving. Women being allowed to drive "undermines social value".

Some of the reasons why women are banned from driving include:

  • Driving a car may require women to uncover their face
  • It can lead to interacting with other males like at accidents
  • Driving can be the first step towards the erosion of traditional values, which is gender segregation
  • If a women starts driving then she will leave the house more often
  • Women driving can lead to overcrowding the streets and deprive young men from driving

There was a campaign in 2011 called Women to Drive but it was unsuccessful. Many girls however still so drive without getting caught and they love it. But why should they have to hide and drive?

The Purpose Behind This Blog

Hello there blogger! My name is Utsavi Patel and I am a senior here at Metropolitan Academy. I am currently enrolled in Arabic 4 Honors and the focus for our class this year is to spread awareness about the events that are going on the Middle Eastern Countries. My topic for this project will be Women Rights the Middle Eastern Countries. These rights include political, social, educational, employment, etc... I want people mostly women and girls our age to know that some of the rights that we take for granted are those same rights that some women are fighting for somewhere else. Through this blog I want to encourage everyone, but especially females to stand up and fight for themselves because without realizing they may be setting a example for not only other women around the world but also the future generations.
